Wendell Berry was born in 1934 in Henry County, Kentucky. From the University of Kentucky in 1956, he earned a bachelor's degree and went on to receive a masters degree in 1957. He also received a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University in 1958.
Berry has taught at Georgetown College, New York University, Stanford University, the University of Cincinnati, and Bucknell University. From 1964 to 1977, he taught at his alma mater, the University of Kentucky and again from 1987 to 1993.
