In a bizarre rock fall while climbing the island's biggest peak, he became stuck behind a one-ton slab boulder. He was recovered two days later, only to have both legs amputated at the mid-thigh.
He scaled Tasmania's Cradle Mountain 10 months later, using a customized wheelchair and the seat of his pants.
