Wanda Sykes Biography

Named one of the "25 Funniest People in America" by Entertainment Weekly magazine, Wanda Sykes rates at the top of the list, even by her peers. Her smart-witted stand up has sent her career in many different areas, from stage to screen to entertaining presidents.

Sykes spent five years as part of the HBO's critically acclaimed Chris Rock Show as both a performer and writer on the show. She won an Emmy for her writing as well as for her humorous commentaries on Inside the NFL. She's also appeared frequently on Larry David's hit HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm.

She's appeared in many feature films, including Evan Almighty, with Steve Carell, and Monster-In-Law with Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.

She wrote, produced and starred in FOX's Wanda At Large, and her own late night talk show The Wanda Sykes Show aired on FOX in the 2009-2010 season.

Her Emmy-nominated HBO specials I'm a Be Me and Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired garnered rave reviews, and covered everything from health care town halls to getting her first bikini wax.

In 2009 Sykes was the featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, where she teased President Barack Obama about the numerous shirtless pictures of him in the media, and managed to touch upon issues of race and politics with an edge that only Wanda can deliver.

She continues to perform all over the country, with her direct and hilarious observations on all facets of life. As for her popularity (which continues to grow) Wanda says, "I think it's because my comedy is in your face, and it comes from a place that's real."
