Walt Handelsman Biography

Walt Handelsman is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist/animator for Newsday in New York, having won the award in 1997 and 2007. Tribune Media Services in Chicago syndicates his work to over 250 newspapers throughout the country and worldwide. Walt's animation firm, WALTTOON, LLC, produces high-quality comedic animations for a variety of customers in addition to his work as an editorial cartoonist. Walt is a dynamic public speaker who has dazzled audiences all across the country with his fast-paced, high-energy performances. Handelsman's demonstration illustrates the critical thinking abilities he utilizes to create on deadline by combining examples of his still cartoons with animations, on-the-spot sketching, and voice and sound impressions. His program is controversial, instructive, and just humorous, according to event planners. Kennedy Journalism Award in 1996, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award in 2003, and the Pulitzer Prize in 1997 and 2007. Walt taught himself Flash animation in 2006, and in 2007 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Animation for the first time. Walt worked for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans (1989-2001), The Scranton Times (1985-1989), and a network of 13 Suburban Baltimore weeklies before joining Newsday in February 2001. (1982-1985). Before becoming a cartoonist, he earned a general studies degree in advertising from the University of Cincinnati and worked in layout, design, and sales for a Baltimore advertising firm. Walt has seven volumes of editorial cartoons under his belt, as well as a children's book from 1995. He resides in Woodbury, New York, with his wife and two boys.
