Wally Adeyemo is an American attorney and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury under President Joe Biden from March 2021 to January 2025, becoming the first black American to hold this position. Born in Nigeria, he was raised in Southern California and went on to Berkeley, earning a B.A. and then a J.D. from Yale Law School.

His career began in politics with John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. It was followed by roles in Barack Obama’s administration, including the first chief of staff at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Elizabeth Warren and deputy chief of staff to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. From 2015 to 2016, he was Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, representing Obama at G7 and G20 summits.
