Vir Das was born in Dehradun and has lived in Africa, where he attended Indian Language Schools in Lagos, Nigeria, Shimla, and Delhi. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Theater from Knox College in Illinois, with a focus on execution. Vir is also related to Knox's Delta Theta chapter of the Sigma Nu organization.
Following his graduation from Knox, Vir was accepted into the Stanislavsky Program of the Moscow Arts Theatre. Vir appeared in three sketch satire troupes while in the United States: The Really Useless Improv Inc, Illegal Aliens, and Illegal Aliens.
