Burgio is a University of Missouri graduate. In 1976, he relocated to California to start a construction company, and in 1987, he began playing poker tournaments on a regular basis. Burgio is most known for winning the 1992 Four Queens Poker Classic's Best All-Around Player Award.
In 1992, he was the first player to finish in the money in a World Series of Poker event, the Ace to Five Draw. He won a World Series of Poker bracelet in the Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo tournament in 1994, defeating a final table that included Howard The Professor Lederer and Jay Heimowitz.
