Vikram Patel Biography

At Harvard Medical School's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Vikram Patel holds the title of The Pershing Square Professor of Global Health. He is a distinguished teacher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (where he helped establish the Center for Global Mental Health in 2008) and an assistant educator and joint executive of the Center for Chronic Conditions and Injuries at the Public Health Foundation of India. He is also a fellow benefactor of Sangath, an Indian NGO that won the MacArthur Foundation's International Prize for Creative and Effective Institutions in 2008 and the WHO Public Health Champ. He is a member of the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences and has held positions on a number of trustee boards for the WHO and the Government of India. His work on the importance of mental illness, its connection to poverty and social disadvantage, and the use of network resources to deliver interventions for their anticipation and treatment have been recognized by the Pardes Humanitarian Prize (the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation), the Pardes Medal (US National Academy of Medicine), the Chalmers Medal (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, UK), the Sarnat Medal (US National Academy of Medicine), and a privileged doctorate from Georgetown University (Austin College). He also has experience in the fields of pre-adult health and child development. In 2015, he was listed as one of TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people.
