Both the National Team and the Central Army squads were captained by Viacheslav Fetisov. Fetisov won the top defenseman award at the European Junior Hockey Championships in 1976, and he repeated the feat in the World Junior Championships in 1978, earning a spot on the tournament All-Star team.
