In 1949, Wang was born in New York City to wealthy foreign parents: Her mother was a warlord's daughter from China, while her father worked as an official in the pharmaceutical industry. The couple left China following the Communist uprising and ultimately settled in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Vera was a talented ice skater and attended the prestigious private schools Sarah Lawrence, Sorbonne, and Columbia. She was a real professional skater while she was a secondary school student at Chapin, but when she didn't make the 1968 Olympic team, as she explained in 2001, she looked to design to fill the void.
