Vera was a talented ice skater and attended the prestigious private schools Sarah Lawrence, Sorbonne, and Columbia. She was a real professional skater while she was a secondary school student at Chapin, but when she didn't make the 1968 Olympic team, as she explained in 2001, she looked to design to fill the void.
