Van Jackson PhD Biography

Dr. Van Jackson is an international affairs fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations and a visiting fellow at the Center for a New American Security who focuses on the intersection of Asian security innovation and practice. Additionally, he is a visiting scholar with the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service's Asian Studies Program. Dr. Jackson served as the Working Group Chair of the U.S. Republic of Korea Extended Deterrence Policy Committee and Senior Country Director for Korea in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) from 2009 to 2014. Dr. Jackson's job responsibilities throughout his stay at OSD ranged from long-term methodology and strategy arranging and investigations of military advances to emergency executives and direct arrangements with various Asian government services. He supported the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review, the 2013 Strategic Choices Management Review, and OSD's use of the American strategy of rebalancing the Asia-Pacific. Dr. Jackson spoke to the Department in direct conversations with North Korea regarding its atomic program, updated the Department on emergency the board and vital approaches through two Korean Peninsula emergencies from 2009 to 2012, and developed the primary expanded prevention meeting instruments with South Korea and Japan. Dr. Jackson also updated the White House and Secretary regarding Defense. In OSD, he has received many awards, including the Exceptional Civilian Service Medal.
