Valerie Brisco-Hooks was awarded three gold medals in the 1984 Olympics for her efforts in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and 4 × 100-meter relay. Valerie was the first female athlete to win both the 200 and 400 meters at the same Olympics. In 1984, Brisco-Hooks also won the national indoor 200 and outdoor 400. Valerie raced the 400 meters in 49.83 seconds, making her the first American woman to break the 50-second barrier. Valerie established a world indoor record of 52.99 seconds in the 400-meter dash in 1985, and she won the national 400-meter dash again in 1986.
