The eighth UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator was Valerie Ann Amos Baroness Amos PC. She had served as the British High Commissioner to Australia before being appointed to the UN. She has created a Labor Life Peer in 1997 and later became Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Lords.
Amos became the first black woman to serve in the British Cabinet when she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development on May 12, 2003, replacing Clare Short, who resigned. When Gordon Brown was elected prime minister, she resigned from the cabinet.
