She had served as the British High Commissioner to Australia before being appointed to the UN. Amos became the first black woman to serve in the British Cabinet when she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development on May 12, 2003, replacing Clare Short, who resigned. When Gordon Brown was elected prime minister, she resigned from the cabinet.
