Val Gray Ward, creator of on-screen characters, a social activist, and a widely recognized theatre character was born on August 21, 1932, in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, the oldest all-black community in the United States. Ward, who was the young daughter of a successful clergyman, showed an early interest in execution.
She enthusiastically performed readings of sonnets for her father's group and won many stylistic competitions at school. She was really interested in African American literature overall. In 1950, Ward graduated from Mound Bayou High School and yearned to enroll in college. Instead, she married, relocated to Chicago in 1951, and gave birth to five children.
