A rock group from both America and New Zealand is called Unknown Mortal Orchestra. In the spring of 2010, guitarist and singer Ruban Nielson posted the song "Funny Ffrends" on his Bandcamp page. The band's self-titled debut album was released on Fat Possum Records on June 21, 2011. The record earned positive reviews very immediately.
The album received an 8.1 on Pitchfork, which said that UMO manages to achieve a distinctive immersive and hallucinogenic atmosphere without depending on the standard assortment of bong-ripping effects. The group received the Taite Music Prize for the album in the spring of 2012.
