Unity Dow Biography

Unity Dow, a human rights activist and lawyer who became Botswana's first female High Court judge in January 1998, believes that writing books allow her to "reclaim the voice" to speak out on human rights and women's problems. She was able to achieve significant advancements in legislation related to child support, rape, and married women's property rights prior to her nomination as a High Court Judge. Her works, which vividly depict women's efforts in Botswana for equality and justice, are based on her own direct experiences working in these fields. She co-founded the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project and built a women's center in her native community. She is also a member of International Women's Rights Watch, an advocacy group for which she is well known for the Citizenship Case. She was one of three Justices on a court who declared the Kalahari Bushmen were allowed to return to their native territory and resume their hunting practices in December 2006. She has worked as a prosecutor and as a law partner in a criminal defense firm. She has collaborated with international human rights organizations on projects. The Urban Morgan Institute of Human Rights, the International Association of Women Judges, International Women's Rights Action Watch, Amnesty International, UNICEF, and Africa Legal Aid are just a few of the organizations involved. Far and Beyon is her debut novel, which follows a family in a remote hamlet in modern-day Botswana as they struggle to reconcile traditional and western values, gender disputes, poverty, and the Aids pandemic crisis. While this is not an autobiography, many of the events in the story parallel Dow's experiences in Botswana. As the tale progresses inexorably towards its terrible finale, strong female characters fight against the hypocrisy and cruelty of male assault. Despite its inconsistencies and the juggling of realities between traditional African beliefs and Western ideas, Unity Dows' most recent work, Juggling Truths, reads like a childhood memoir.
