Umar Saif is a serial entrepreneur and Associate Professor of Computer Science at Pakistan's Lahore University of Management Sciences. His research focuses on digital divide-bridging technologies. BitMate, a BitTorrent client for low-bandwidth connections built by Saif, has over 30,000 users from 172 countries. He invented the Poor Man's Broadband technology, which allows individuals in impoverished countries to connect to the Internet at near-broadband speeds by pooling their idle bandwidth. He is one of the co-founders of SMSall.pk, Pakistan's version of Twitter. SMSall.pk has been used to send over four billion SMS. He has received the MIT Technovator Award, the Mark Weiser Award, the Microsoft Research Digital Inclusion Award, and the IDG Technology Pioneer Award. SCI, Pakistan's first start-up incubator, was created by him. Saif worked at MIT and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge before coming to Pakistan.
