Tyshawn Sorey is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, ensemble leader, and conductor who draws inspiration from a wide range of conventional and experimental genres to create music that celebrates alternative musical models and combines composition with improvisation.
In addition to many other structural components, he blurs the lines between composition and improvisation and musical genres by using highly structured improvisational sound worlds, extremely complex rhythmic and harmonic phrasing, and real-time sound exploration. In his albums Koan (2009) and Alloy (2014), he examines a range of musical and philosophical ideas from the East and the West.
