Pastornicky was picked in the fifth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of The Pendleton School. Pastornicky hit.263 in 50 games with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays in 2008, stealing 27 bases in 32 tries. In 109 games with Single-A Lansing in 2009, he hit.269 with 51 stolen bases in 66 attempts. With High-A Dunedin, he appeared in 15 games. Pastornicky began 2010 with Dunedin, where he hit.258 and stole 24 bases in 31 tries. He was selected for the All-Star Game of the Florida State League. Pastornicky was traded to the Atlanta Braves along with Lex González and Tim Collins on July 15, 2010, for Yunel Escobar and Jo-Jo Reyes. He spent the last months of 2010 with Mississippi's Double-A affiliate. In 115 games, he hit.257 with 35 stolen bases in 44 tries. Pastornicky was a member of the Phoenix Suns, where he had a 15-54 record in 15 games. Pastornicky spent most of 2011 with Mississippi, but he also spent 27 games with Triple-A Gwinnett. In 90 games with Mississippi, he hit.299 and swiped 20 of 28 bases. He was selected for the Southern League All-Star Game but went 0-4 in the game. On September 28, 2011, Pastornicky was called up to the majors for the first time. Pastornicky made his major league debut on April 5, 2012, against the New York Mets in New York City as the Braves' Opening Day shortstop. Pastornicky got his first hit of the day, a triple off Ramón Ramrez that went over the head of Andrés Torres in center field. On April 10, 2012, he hit his first home run at Minute Maid Park against the Houston Astros. After having the lowest fielding percentage among all major league shortstops, he was sent back down to Triple-A Gwinnett. On June 2, 2012, he was replaced by Andrelton Simmons, who was called up from Double-A Mississippi.
