Jonas Stein, a guitarist, and singer founded the group. While Stein was still in Be Your Own Pet, Turbo Fruits was born. The original lineup of Turbo Fruits also featured drummer John Eatherly from Be Your Own Pet. The band's self-titled debut was released in the United States via Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label and then by ARK Recordings a few months later in the United Kingdom. The band (Stein Eatherly & Peebles) also made an appearance in Drew Barrymore's first film as a filmmaker, Whip It, that autumn.
