The Queer Black Immigrant Project (QBip), a black radical legal effort that offers LGBTQIA+ Black immigrants legal counsel, was founded by Tsion Gurmu. As a legal fellow with the African Services Committee, Gurmu also offers free legal counsel and social assistance to black LGBT refugees who are escaping laws against homosexuality in their own countries. She works with HIV/AIDS-affected refugees.
She was honored with a 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 Law & Policy award by the publication. Prior to this, she worked with Teach for America as a Middle School Language Arts Instructor and Student Coordinator for the Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago.
