In two respects, Trina Turk feels fortunate. First, because she understood what she wanted to do when she grew up - professional clothes design – and second, because she is excelling beyond her wildest expectations in doing so. Turk's mother taught her to sew when she was 11 years old. She was born in California and raised there as well as in Washington. She earned her first position at Britannia Jeans, a Seattle-based sportswear brand, after studying garment design at the University of Washington. Turk's next trip was to Los Angeles, where she designed surf apparel for Ocean Pacific and swam through a sea of 30 patterns every season. Other design positions, primarily for juniors, followed. Turks decided to start her own firm after realizing that her background wouldn't get her any contracts to create a line of contemporary women's clothes. Trina Turk was founded in 1995 by her husband, Jonathan Skow, a former stylist who is now a photographer. Barney's New York, Fred Segal, and Saks Fifth Avenue all carried her items in the same year. Trina Turk's wholesale sales reached $40 million in 2009, with design and manufacturing based minutes from Downtown Los Angeles in Alhambra, California. The Trina Turk Collection is packed with the Season's most casually elegant - and "must-have" silhouettes, inspired by the multicultural mix, architecture, and scenery of Los Angeles and California. Trina's philosophy is to produce wearable, upbeat apparel that draws inspiration from classic American athletics. The series is known for its amazing pant fit and stunning distinctive designs. A license with Apparel Ventures allowed swimwear to be released in 2007. Trina Turk has always been inspired by the desert's cocktail parties and poolside lifestyle, so it was only right that the first Trina Turk store debuted in March 2002 in a modernist structure built by Albert Fey in Palm Springs, California. The Los Angeles flagship is a light, airy, ladylike pink-hued environment. Trina Turk New York launched in the meatpacking district in December 2006, giving a splash of California color to the area. Trina Turk home launched in Palm Springs in May 2008, right next door to the original shop. The most recent additions include the boutiques on Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California, Burlingame, California, and the Bal Harbour stores in Miami, Florida. This May, a summer-only boutique in East Hampton will open. In spring 2009, Hue introduced a hosiery "guest designer" line, as well as a printed fabric collection for the house with Schumacher, a renowned home furnishings company, and Trina Turk residential items, such as rugs, cushions, and tabletop textiles.
