He earned an associate's degree in theatre from the evangelical two-year Andrew College before spending a year at the historically black Prairie View A&M University. Byers subsequently proceeded to the University of Kansas and received his Bachelor's in Communications. His acting master's degree was finally earned at Yale School of Drama.
