Tracy Lawrence grew up in Foreman, Arkansas, after being born in Atlanta, Texas. Lawrence joined his first band when he was 16 years old. He was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity at Southern Arkansas State University in Magnolia, Arkansas. Lawrence moved to Nashville, Tennessee, from Arkansas in 1990.
While attempting to break into the Nashville music industry, Lawrence worked as an ironworker and in phone sales. He began performing in talent shows and was able to support himself. In 1991, he performed at the Bluebird Cafe, where he met Wayne Edwards, who would later become his manager.
