Tony Blair is a British politician who led the Labour Party from 1994 to 2007 and served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007. Between 1994 through 1997, he served as the opposition's leader. Blair served as the Sedgefield representative in parliament from 1983 until 2007. Following the unexpected passing of his predecessor, John Smith, he was chosen as the leader of the Labour Party in July 1994. The party used the term "New Labour" during Blair's leadership to distinguish itself from earlier Labour programs and the conventional idea of socialism. Blair announced his support for a novel idea he called "socialism," which entails policies that acknowledge people's social interdependence and promote social justice, community, equality of all citizens, and equal opportunity, also known as the Third Way. Blair's detractors criticized him for moving the Labour Party toward what they saw as the center of British politics, giving up "real" socialism, and being overly receptive to capitalism. Supporters said that the Labour Party needed to show that it had made a clear break from its left-wing past in order to win an election again (after four straight general election failures). In May 1997, the Labour Party achieved a landslide general election victory, the biggest in its history. Since 1812, Blair, who is 43 years old, is the youngest prime minister. Following his public reaction to the passing of Diana, Princess of Wales, in September 1997, Blair earned early personal popularity, earning a 93% approval rating from the general public. Under his leadership, the Labour Party went on to win two more general elections: in 2001, when it triumphed by a landslide, and in 2005, when it had a far smaller majority. The National Minimum Wage Act, Human Rights Act, and Freedom of Information Act were all passed during his first tenure as prime minister, and his administration also oversaw a significant rise in government spending. Additionally, his administration organized referendums in which voters in Scotland and Wales supported devolved governance. Blair participated in the Good Friday Agreement negotiations in Northern Ireland. In June 2007, Gordon Brown replaced Blair as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. Blair was named the Quartet's official Special Envoy for the Middle East on the day he announced his resignation as prime minister, a position he retained until May 2015. The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change is now under his direction.
