Tom Wolfe grew up in the city of Richmond, Virginia. He received his education at Washington and Lee University (B.A., 1951) and Yale University (Ph.D., American Studies, 1957). He began working as a reporter for the Springfield (Massachusetts) Union in December 1956.
This was the start of a ten-year career in newspapers, the majority of which was spent as a general assignment correspondent. He worked as The Washington Post's Latin American reporter for six months in 1960, winning the Washington Newspaper Guild's international news prize for his coverage of Cuba.
