American politician and attorney Tom Vilsack held the position of secretary of agriculture from January 2009 until January 2017. Vilsack, a member of the Iowa Democratic Party, presided as Iowa's 40th governor from 1999 until 2007.
He officially began running for president of the United States in the Democratic Party's nomination on November 30, 2006, however, he halted his campaign on February 23, 2007. On December 17, 2008, Barack Obama made public Vilsack's appointment as secretary of agriculture. On January 20, 2009, the United States Senate unanimously approved his appointment.
