Sturridge, the son of director Charles Sturridge and actress Phoebe Nicholls, and the grandson of actors Anthony Nicholls and Faith Kent (née Heaslip) was born in Lambeth, London. Sturridge attended Winchester College and the Harrodian School, although he dropped out before doing his A levels.
The oldest of three children, he has two younger siblings, Matilda and Arthur, all of whom have pursued careers in theatre. Beginning as a kid actor, Sturridge appeared in his father's and mother's 1996 television rendition of Gulliver's Travels. In 2004 Vanity Fair and Being Julia marked his comeback.
