Tom Ricks Biography

The New America Foundation's senior advisor on national security is Thomas Ricks. Additionally, he contributes to the periodical Foreign Policy. He is now working on a study of the contributions George Orwell and Winston Churchill made to 20th-century politics and culture. From 2000 through 2008, Ricks reported on the American military for the Washington Post. At the Wall Street Journal, where he worked as a reporter for 17 years, he covered the same story up until the end of 1999. He covered American military operations in Somalia, Haiti, Korea, Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was a member of the Wall Street Journal team that received the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 2000 for a collection of pieces discussing potential changes the U.S. military should make to better meet the needs of the twenty-first century. Additionally, Ricks was a member of the Washington Post reporting team that took home the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the launch of the American counteroffensive against terrorism. 2009 saw the release of his second book, The Gamble: General Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq 2006–2008. The U.S. military's invasion of Afghanistan is the subject of his debut book, A Soldier's Duty, which was released by Random House in June 2001.
