Since August 1998, Fitton has served as President of Judicial Watch. The group Judicial Watch works to advance honesty, openness, and accountability in government as well as loyalty to the rule of law, according to its mission statement.

In order to carry out its mission, the organisation primarily requests access to government records, files lawsuits under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and other public records acts, engages in other types of civil litigation, and pursues a number of other initiatives aimed at putting public pressure on government institutions and public officials.
