Despite majoring in journalism at the University of Missouri, Berenger chose to pursue a career in acting. He relocated to New York City and started working in regional theatre. He worked as a star in soap operas and One Life to Live. In the 1977 film Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Berenger played a killer in a minor but notable part.
These early parts showcase Berenger's versatility as a villain and a hero. The 1980s marked Berenger's cinematic career's apex. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1986 for his performance as the psychopath Sgt. Barnes in the film Platoon.
