TLC Biography

The initial members of the American female group TLC were Tionne T-Boz Watkins, Lisa Left Eye Lopes, and Rozonda Chilli Thomas. The group, which was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1990, enjoyed great success in the decade despite multiple legal disputes with one another, the group's record label, and management. On the Billboard Hot 100, they had nine top ten songs, including the singles Creep Waterfalls, No Scrubs, and Unpretty, which peaked at number one four times. Additionally, the group released four multi-platinum records, including CrazySexyCool (1994), which is still the first album by a female group to be awarded a diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Additionally, TLC made history as the first R&B group to ever obtain a Million certifications from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for FanMail (1999). TLC is the best-selling American female group and ranks second globally after the English group Spice Girls with over 65 million albums sold. On the list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, TLC was chosen by VH1 as the best female group, coming in at number 12. TLC was listed as one of the top musical groups and the seventh-most lucrative act of the 1990s by Billboard magazine. Four career Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, and five Soul Train Music Awards are among the group's honors. Twenty years after their debut, TLC received two awards: the Legend Award at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards Japan and Outstanding Contribution to Music at the 17th MOBO Awards. The other members of TLC view all three of its members as indispensable, and each has made an equal contribution. The surviving members decided to continue as a partnership when Lopes passed away in 2002 rather than finding a replacement. They announced that they will not break up after the release of their final album, TLC, on June 30, 2017, and that they would instead continue to perform together.
