Santana was a major rival of the corporation from the late 1970s until the early 1990s. He always managed to stay in the mix, no matter how things altered. In 1979, he earned a name for himself by capturing the World Tag Team Championship with Hall of Famer Ivan Putski, but it was only the beginning.
Santana was one of the most popular Intercontinental Champions in WWE history during the company's mainstream rebirth in the mid-1980s. He ended Don Muraco's year-long reign in January 1984, and he even managed to reclaim the gold from Greg Valentine after being dethroned later that year.
