A Tuareg musical ensemble from northern Mali's Sahara Desert, Tinariwen has won a Grammy Award. The band was established in Tamanrasset, Algeria, in 1979, but moved to Mali in the 1990s following a cease-fire.
With the release of The Radio Tisdas Sessions and appearances at the Festival au Désert in Mali and the Roskilde Festival in Denmark in 2001, the band first began to garner popularity outside the Sahara. The guitar dominates the Tinariwen sound, which is based on the Tuareg assouf musical genre.
