About Timothy Tyson
Timothy Tyson Biography
Tim B. Tyson is a senior research researcher at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies and an adjunct professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina. His most recent book, The Blood of Emmett Till, received the 2018 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, was voted Best Book of 2017 by both the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio, and reached the long list of 10 novels for the 2017 National Book Award. It was voted Best Southern Book of 2017 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Blood of Emmett Till, according to Vann R. Newkirk of The Atlantic, "manages to transform history into prophesy and insists that we do the one important thing we aren't frequently required to do with history—learn from it." Tyson is also the author of Blood Done Sign My Name, which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award, won the Southern Book Award for Nonfiction, and was nominated for a Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Tyson was an executive producer on Mike Wiley's 2008 play and a writer-consultant on Jeb Stuart's 2010 feature picture adaptation. His 1999 book, Radio Free Dixie: Robert F. Williams and the Roots of Black Power, won the Organization of American Historians' (OAH) James Rawley Prize for best book on race and the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize for best first book in U.S. History; it was also the basis for Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power, which won the OAH's 2006 Eric Barnou Prize for best historica. He is the co-editor, with David Cecelski, of Democracy Betrayed: The Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 and Its Legacy, which won the Gustavus Meyers Center for Human Rights in North America's 1998 Outstanding Book Award, and the author of Ghosts of 1898: Wilmington's Race Riot and the Rise of White Supremacy, which won the National Association of Black Journalists' 2007 Excellence Award. He is a member of the North Carolina NAACP, Repairers of the Breach, and the UNC Center for Civil Rights' executive committees.
