Timothy Naftali Biography

Timothy Naftali is a clinical associate professor of history and public service with dual appointments at Wagner and History. He also serves as co-director of NYU's Center for the United States and the Cold War. Naftali is a native of Montreal, a Yale graduate, and a Harvard historian with a Ph.D. in history. He specializes in writing on presidential history, international history, and national security and intelligence policy. Together with Russian historian Aleksandr Fursenko, he co-authored the acclaimed books Khrushchev's Cold War, which was named to Foreign Affairs' 2014 list of the ten best books on the Cold War, and One Hell of a Gamble: Khrushchev Castro and Kennedy 1958–1964 using archives from the Soviet era. Naftali created Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism while serving as a consultant to the 9/11 Commission. It offers a history of US counterterrorism strategy. Naftali was the founding director of the federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California, where he wrote the exhibit on Watergate, oversaw the release of 1.3 million pages of presidential papers, and oversaw the production of nearly 700 hours of the infamous Nixon tapes. He then moved to NYU Wagner. Naftali is a frequent guest on television as a commentator on modern history. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Slate, and Foreign Affairs. He most recently appeared in the PBS programs Dick Cavett's Watergate and CNN's The Sixties and The Seventies. The Bomb and Vietnam by Dick Cavett.
