On June 5, 2014, Timothy Massad was sworn in as the new chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission after being approved by the Senate of the United States. Prior to this, Massad served as the U.S. Department of Treasury's assistant secretary for financial stability after receiving a nomination from President Obama and Senate confirmation.

A depression was avoided under TARP because of Treasury investments in financial institutions, credit markets, and the auto sector.
