Timothy Knowles Biography

Lewis-Sebring is the director of the University of Chicago's Urban Education Institute. The Institute's goal is to develop innovative educational approaches that will help us answer one of the country's most pressing problems: How can we ensure that urban American children receive consistently superior education? Knowles was formerly the Center for Urban School Improvement's Senior Research Associate and Lewis-Sebring Executive Director. In addition, he held the position of deputy superintendent for teaching and learning at the Boston Public Schools, where he was in charge of principal and staff supervision, professional development, and community collaborations. He had a variety of other posts, including founding director of a full-service, K–8 school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York, which was a $30 million literacy teaching endeavor. He was also co-director of the Boston Annenberg Challenge.
