About Timothy Dalton
Timothy Dalton Biography
Timothy Dalton could be the last of a rapidly dwindling breed of swashbuckling Shakespearean performers with classical training who have simultaneously achieved success in theatre, television, and film. He has been ruthlessly compared to other performers for taking on parts originally originated by others, including Sir Laurence Olivier in Wuthering Heights (1970), James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989), and Rhett Butler in Scarlett (1994). Unflappable and kind-hearted, he has often said that he enjoys the uncertainty of trials. Dalton excelled in athletics and showed an interest in the sciences while attending a school for gifted kids. He was always interested in playing, maybe because both of his grandfathers were vaudevillians, but it wasn't until he attended a performance of Macbeth when he was 16 that his future became clear. His ability and timeless good looks instantly gained his professional work in television, including regular roles on the 14-episode series Sat'day While Sunday (1967) with the young Malcolm McDowell and as a guest performer on an episode of the short-lived TV show Judge Dee (1969). He received a recommendation from Peter O'Toole for the part of the youthful King Philip of France in The Lion in Winter (1968), which also happened to be Anthony Hopkins' big break. Although his voice was dubbed into Italian by another actor, the next year he co-starred in the Italian film The Voyeur (1970) with Marcello Mastroianni and Virna Lisi. During this period, Dalton also incorporated a sizable amount of BBC work, such as The Three Princes (1968), a television film, and Candida (1973). (TV). He was also considered and tested for the character of James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), but he rejected the job because he believed he was too young. His following picture, Cromwell (1970), was another costume drama he did with director Ken Hughes, with whom he subsequently collaborated on Sextette, his debut American feature (1978). With Wuthering Heights (1970) and Mary Queen of Scots (1970), he followed Cromwell (1971).
