More than fifteen books on these topics have been written by Beatley, including Green Urbanism: Learning from European Cities (recently translated into Chinese) Native to Nowhere: Sustaining Home and Community in a Global Age, and Planning for Coastal Resilience is a book on habitat conservation planning.

Resilient Cities and Green Urbanism Down Under: Learning From Sustainable Australian Communities are two works he co-authored with Australian urbanist Peter Newman.

The American Planning Association named Beatley's book Ethical Land Use as one of the "100 Essential Books in Planning." In his most recent book, Biophilic Cities: Integrating Nature into Urban Design and Planning, he makes the case that urban areas can and should be planned in a way that encourages everyday interaction with the natural world.

It lists several methods for doing this, including sidewalk gardens, green walls, and green roofs. The Nature of Cities, a documentary about green cities and urban nature that Beatley recently co-wrote and co-produced, has been broadcast on PBS stations around the country.

Additionally, he contributes a regular piece to Planning Magazine called Ever Green where he talks about sustainability and environmental issues. Several institutions and agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Virginia Sea Grant, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, among others, have supported his study.
