Tim joined WH Smith in 1973 after working for Allied Breweries, where he was raised. When Tim was let go from WH Smith in 1982, he used #6000 of the severance money to launch the astonishingly successful Waterstone bookstores. He later raised $100,000 in venture financing and opened the first location of Waterstone's Booksellers on London's Old Brompton Road.
Tim transformed British book shopping and made Waterstone famous as "the eponymous upmarket bookshop." One of the two or three biggest and most effective venture capital firms at the time was Waterstone. Nine years later, for #47 million, he sold the business to his former employers, only to acquire it back in 1998 along with EMI and Advent International!
