Timothy Simon Smith was born in London to a landscape painter mother and a journalist father who, during World War II, had taken on the German-Jewish the last name of Roth to conceal his ethnicity when going to nations unfriendly to the British. Roth first pursued a career as a sculptor and attended London's Camberwell School of Art.
After spending some time there, he took the decision to pursue acting and made his debut at the age of 18 in the TV film Made in Britain as a racist skinhead.
