Arboretum Ventures' managing director in Ann Arbor. With $235 million under management, Arboretum Ventures is a venture capital firm with a focus on healthcare. Petersen is a member of the investment committee and is in charge of managing the finances and funds for the Arboretum.

He oversaw Arboretum's investments in Accuri Cytometers (bought by Becton Dickinson and Co.) and HealthMedia (acquired by Johnson & Johnson), and he served as a director of each organization until leaving. He also oversees Arboretum's investments in Advanced ICU Care, Inogen PathCentral, ArborMetrix, and Tangent and has directorships in each of those companies.

He routinely gives venture capital lectures at nearby institutions and participates in a variety of community initiatives promoting entrepreneurship. He serves as the chairman of the board of directors of the Michigan Venture Capital Association and manages the Alumni Fund for the Wolverine Venture Fund.

Since he started investing in venture capital 15 years ago, Petersen has concentrated on funding businesses that are revolutionizing the way healthcare is provided. He oversaw the development and expansion of the Institute's programs at the University of Michigan's Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies until joining Arboretum in 2002.

He was also in charge of the Wolverine Venture Fund, an early-stage life science and technology investment fund run by the Institute. Petersen formerly worked for Industrial Economics Inc. for nine years as an economic consultant. He attended Williams College, where he was the captain of the men's tennis team, to earn his bachelor's degree in economics.

He earned an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and a master's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
