Tim Dorsey, who was born in Indiana and migrated to Florida at the age of 1, grew up in Riviera Beach, a little community approximately an hour north of Miami. In 1983, he earned his degree from Auburn University. He served as The Plainsman's editor while a student at Auburn.
He worked as a police and court reporter for The Alabama Journal, a now-defunct nightly publication in Montgomery, from 1983 until 1987. He started working as a general assignment reporter for The Tampa Tribune in 1987. He previously held positions as a copy desk editor and a political writer for the Tribune's Tallahassee office.
