He began by performing with the Los Angeles comedy/improv troupe The Groundlings, alongside other cast members Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and former SNL repertory actor Laraine Newman. Beginning their careers were Phil Hartman and Jon Lovitz. There he met Chris Kattan, with whom he eventually became good friends before both of them joined Saturday Night Live.
During his tenure at The Groundlings, he also made many television appearances, notably on Strangers with Candy Grace Under Fire and Living Single. Will also provided the voice for The Oblongs' armless and legless father. During a quick recasting of Saturday Night Live in 1995, he was added as a featured cast member.
