He began his career as a Disney animator, and many of his films have a highly stylized setting that seems like a cartoon. Bill and Jean Burton welcomed their first son, Timothy William Burton, into the world. Burton characterized his younger self as eccentric, self-absorbed, and very creative. He struggled at home and in school, and he used horror movies to escape from the hardships of daily life. He had an obsession with Vincent Price movies, especially those that were adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories. The misfit child-man trapped between the adult world and one of childlike imagination would be the most recurring character in Burton's film career, and he would cast Price in his final acting role in Edward Scissorhands (1990). He received a Disney scholarship to study at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, after graduating from high school. After three years of study, Walt Disney Studios employed him as an animator trainee. Although Ralph Bakshi's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings was the first movie Burton worked on, he was not given credit for it for reasons that are unknown. Instead, he worked on Burton's first short film, Vincent, a six-minute movie about a little kid who wishes to be Vincent Price. Following that came the live-action short Frankenweenie, which grabbed the attention of actor Paul Reubens (better known as Pee-Wee Herman) who was seeking for a director for his project Pee-Big Wee's Adventure and was ruled inappropriate for children for some reason (1985). Despite having a $7 million budget, the movie grossed considerably more than $40 million at the box office.
