Tia Torres had a turbulent upbringing and was raised in a shattered family in Southern California. She yearned for her own family and from a young age took in stray cats and dogs from the neighborhood. Tia's stepmother, whom she refers to as "mom," reared her.
They both had a passion for animals, and they worked together to maintain the family's unity despite the presence of horses and other "gifts from Mother Nature," as her stepmother referred to them. Financially and physically difficult times forced her stepmother to raise her and take care of a zoo of animals all by herself.
