Tia Torres had a turbulent upbringing and was raised in a shattered family in Southern California. She yearned for her own family and from a young age took in stray cats and dogs from the neighborhood. Tia's stepmother, whom she refers to as "mom," reared her. They both had a passion for animals, and they worked together to maintain the family's unity despite the presence of horses and other "gifts from Mother Nature," as her stepmother referred to them. Financially and physically difficult times forced her stepmother to raise her and take care of a zoo of animals all by herself. Tia still exclusively attributes her strength and discipline to her upbringing. Since Tia didn't have a father role in her childhood, her mother taught her that you don't need much more if your animal partner is faithful to you. When Tia was 17 years old, she left her parents' house with her pet retinue, which included two Arabian horses, an Angora goat, and her Catahoula Leopard Dog, Cougar. Tia fought to keep the entire family of four together as they traveled from place to place together. They experienced adventure after adventure, and occasionally they found themselves without a place to stay and had to sleep in her truck or a horse trailer.
