The Public Protector of South Africa is Adv Thulisile (Thuli) Nomkhosi Madonsela, who has held the job for more than 5 years. Following a unanimous vote by all parties represented in Parliament, the President selected Adv. Madonsela as the third Public Protector with effect from October 15, 2009, making her the first woman to hold the office. As a constitutional institution, the Public Protector has taken on challenging cases since Advocate Madonsela began office. An experienced administrative investigator, equity expert, and policy specialist with over 2.5 decades of post-legal degree experience, and an advocate of the High Court of South Africa Thuli Madonsela has degrees in law from UNISWA (1987), Wits (1990), Fort Hare (2014), and LLD Honoris Causa (Stellenbosch 2015). She has completed some LLM coursework in addition to postgraduate legal coursework, mostly in the areas of public administration, equality, constitutional analysis, and legal drafting. She has training in forensic investigations, strategic planning, scenario planning, project management, mediation, and negotiations, among other administrative investigation techniques.
