The Public Protector of South Africa is Adv Thulisile (Thuli) Nomkhosi Madonsela, who has held the job for more than 5 years. Following a unanimous vote by all parties represented in Parliament, the President selected Adv. Madonsela as the third Public Protector with effect from October 15, 2009, making her the first woman to hold the office.
As a constitutional institution, the Public Protector has taken on challenging cases since Advocate Madonsela began office. She has also gained unprecedented national and worldwide prominence, including being named one of the world's most influential persons by Time Magazine in 2014.
