Venerable Thubten Chodron, who was born in Chicago in 1950, was raised close to Los Angeles. In 1971, she left the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in history. She obtained a teaching certificate after spending one and a half years traveling around Europe, North Africa, and Asia.
She then returned to the University of Southern California to pursue post-graduate studies in education while working as a teacher in the Los Angeles City School System. She took a meditation class taught by Lama Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche in 1975, and she later visited their monastery in Nepal, Kopan, to continue learning and practicing the Buddha's teachings.
