Thuan Pham departed Vietnam, a nation ripped apart by a two-decade conflict, in 1979 on a refugee boat. His mother worked as a ledger keeper at a gas station during the day when the family's application was granted, and they eventually arrived in Maryland. She would load groceries for a store in the evening.
